Welcome to ROAM, a private game reserve for those with a deeper and more profound connection to nature.
ROAM PRIVATE GAME RESERVE has been set-up to create a safe haven for wildlife to enjoy the open space of the Karoo.
Steeped in history and diverse wildlife, the game reserve encompasses more than 5000 hectares of pristine Karoo veld. ROAM is now a sanctuary for many of the species which historically roamed the vast Karoo plains.
Set in a magnificent landscape ideal for world class photography, game and bird sightings and genuine eco-tourism.
Today ROAM offers traditional bush luxury accommodation in a 5-bedroom catered lodge, a 3-bedroom self-catered manor and a 12 sleeper tented camp. Enjoy early morning game drives or for those who struggle to stay still for too long, there are a number of outdoor activities and adventures to choose from.
It’s not known to many that over a century ago, you would have found huge herds of antelope (in particular the famous trekbokke which were herds of migrating springbok in the hundreds of thousands), elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros traversing the great Karoo followed by major predators and scavengers such as lion, cheetah, Cape leopard and brown hyena.
Sadly, when the colonialists and voortrekkers (Dutch settlers) arrived and moved North from the Cape in-land, they hunted all the game which they came across to the point that almost all of the natural game in the area was near to extinct.
As these groups settled along their journey they realized the natural succulent shrub and good ground water made for perfect conditions to farm sheep, which provided the famous Karoo lamb. As delicious as the lamb may be, the over stocking of sheep and subsequent over grazing of the land, destroyed the Karoo’s natural flora.
Thankfully, the last sheep was removed from reserve 15 years ago and the land has since then had an opportunity to rehabilitate the veld back to its natural state.
This is one of the reasons the reserve has such magnificent flora and fauna. ROAM is already home to over 500 head of game including buffalo, giraffe, zebra and 13 species of antelope as well as small predators such as the black backed jackal, caracal, Cape fox and bat eared fox.
It is the vision at ROAM to continue on this path and work tirelessly with conservationists and specialists in their various fields to continue the rehabilitation of veld and flora, and introduce various endangered species in the coming years. Cheetah introduction is planned for late 2017.
ROAM offers three types of accommodation to suit every traveller and each stay can be tailor made to your needs.
